Ateniyoru

Ateniyoru is at one of the exits of Sapporo Station. They have a very cool blackboard display at the front door, with the kind of art I wish I could do but never could.
Your standard kind of izakaya, with English menus. No smoking at lunchtime, so I suppose that's a start.

Ebisu Shoten

We are a little out of downtown Sapporo today at Eigomenu. Ebisu Shoten is in Teine, which is two stops towards Otaru if you take the Airport Express.
It's a nice, fairly newish izakaya which kind of specializes in kushi-age, which is like flavoured mincemeat (of various kinds and tastes) on a stick.
Staff seemed nice, while the restaurant is one, big square room.

Hours: 11.30 a.m. - 1 a.m. (Lunch from 11.30 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

Hokkaishabushabu

Shabushabu, or hotpot, is what you will find at this cosy place downstairs fairly close to Sapporo Station. They have tatami seats, and normal seats and they bring a big pot for you to dump slabs of meat and other goodness in, and get some warm soupy, meaty, hotpot goodness into you on a cold winters night.

Hours: 5 p.m. - 11.30 p.m. (LO 11 p.m.) everyday

Jacksonville Burgers

You can follow Eigomenu on Facebook to keep up to date with all our posts, if Facebook is your thing.

Located a little bit away from the main drag, Jacksonville is a good place to get a nice burger. Good hearty food, cosy interior, and all English menu. Burger on I say.

Sumibi Izakaya

This is a dark place located up on the second floor up a narrow staircase.
I went at an odd time (about 3 p.m.), but there were customers sitting around looking happy enough.
If you come here it's for the Yakitori (grilled chicken on sticks), or may be a hotpot.
Looks a little lived in. They had Chinese and Korean menus also. They've got tables, tatami, and horigotatsu (tables on the floor a pit for your feet)

Opening Hours: Lunch 11:30 a.m. - 2:50 p.m. (LO 2.30 p.m.), Dinner 3 p.m. - 1 a.m. (LO 12.30 a.m.) Open everyday

Yukijirushiparaa

Yukijirushiparaa (Snow Brand Parlor) is just down the road from the Clock Tower. It is a restaurant/cake shop, as you can see from the truly awful photo that I took of the front window. Some of the parfaits, icecreams, and cakes a crazy impressive.
Not only is there a restaurant, but there is also a wee souvenir shop, selling Hokkaido related stuff. (including Royce, which is the best.)
Staff were lovely also, and the main menu was in English.

Tonkatsu Matsunoya

Tonkatsu Matsunoya, funnily enough, are purveyors of very, very nice tonkatsu.
If you put 'define tonkatsu' into Google, you get 'a Japanese dish of pork coated in breadcrumbs and fried'. But it is so much more that. It's juicy on the inside, and crisp and crunchy on the outside. And safe to say not so healthy. Here is a kind of definitive study on Tonkatsu by Bulldog sauce, which is the ubiquitous tonkatsu sauce.

Enough. Let us talk about Tonkatsu Matsunoya. It is on the main drag between Sapporo Station and Odori Park, close to Odori Park. It's open till the small hours so you can go there after the pub, and it's open nice and early, so you can go there for breakfast.
It is a nice, new, clean and tidy looking place. A particular fun element of it is the ticketing machines at the front. You do the whole ordering thing yourself before you step inside. Very customizable, and all in great English. It's the way of the future in these kinds of restaurants in Japan, as there are fewer people coming through to man an order pad. This is a chain restaurant. Non smoking too. Cool

Densetsunosutadonya

My, what a long name you have. All the better for providing you with a great butadon experience they said.
This place is very close to Sapporo Station. Head down one block on the main drag, take a left at the first lights and it's on the right.
Butadon, a la Sukiya, but they've got a lot more of the quality/service/dinner out thing going on.
Love butadon. Fills you up and tastes so good.

Kani Honke

Sapporo is well-known for seafood, and crab is a particular favourite. Kani Honke is downtown in Sapporo, very close to Sapporo Station. It has a huge crab above the entrance, which is a bit of a giveaway to its location.
It has a very cool interior when you first walk in, complete with a lovely English-speaking host in a kimono/yukata (again not sure which). It has kaiseki to, which is the full on Japanese traditional dining experience. Cheap? No.
English menu, nice crab, good staff, interesting building. Why aren't you there already?

Hours: 11.30 a.m. - 10.00 p.m. (LO 9.30 p.m.)
Tabelog Rating: 3.4/5 (pretty high in comparison to most others)
Average Price: Lunch ¥3000-¥4000, Dinner ¥6000-¥7000

Matsuya

Matsuya is a donburi, or beef don (bowl) restauarant located on the main drag between Sapporo Station and Odori Park, very close to Odori Park.
It is busy, clean, with a menu in English for you to choose from. Donburi is a fantastic way to warm up on these cold winter days. They have normal tables, and also a counter to sit at where they chef/server is serving food straight up to you, and you are seated next to some Joe Bloggs you don't know. Salaryman styles.

Opening Hours: 5 a.m. - 3 a.m. everyday.

Ajino Tokeidai

Ajino is the name of the restaurant, Tokeidai is the branch. It's on the main road from Sapporo Station on the left. Can't be missed on account of the cool bit of public art at the entrance.
Nice staff, and a nice English menu for your reading/dining pleasure.
Get your ramen and dumplings going on.

Toretatenemuroko

とれたて根室港 - とれたて根室港 札幌北2条

Toretatenemuroko is a classy sushi place in the basement of a large office building in downtown Sapporo.
There are a number other restaurants, some of them also very nice, but no others with English menus. There was a tantan place with a partial English menu, and a lovely lady running the place, but there wasn't enough English to make the cut. Try it out if you want. It looks cool.
Anyhow, Toretatenemuru is seafood/crab/izakaya place, and it is pretty big. Tables and counter seating, with the chefs making stuff in front of you. The waitresses are in traditional kimono/yukata get up also. Looks real nice.
Main menu is in English, specials not so much.

Opening Hours: Weekdays Lunch 11:30-14:00, Dinner 17:00-23:-00, Saturday 17:00-23:00, Closed Sunday

Lotteria

Lotteria has always been a favourite of mine. I used to be able to eat five burgers quite happily, and then have heartburn for the rest of the day, but the burgers don't kill people. People kill people.
Lotteria burgers used to be greasy and good. For you Kiwis, think BK. But they seem to have changed things up, and now they seem to be a lot more wholesome.
This Lotteria is within the ticket only area of Sapporo Station, but they are two a penny all over Japan.
They have a smoking section, but you can seat yourself away from it easily enough.

Mia Bocca

This is the first restaurant I have featured on other side of the train line from the main part of Sapporo. I have been walking past it every couple of months for two years or so on my way to a doctor appointment. An Italian/Pasta/izakaya establishment according to Tabelog, this restaurant is part of a chain serving decent Italian fare.

Ishiya Bisse

Bisse is upmarket kind of shopping mall with not many shops spread over three floors. Ishiya Bisse is on the street level, and has kind of a cooked food menu with a large showcase for choosing food from also. The menu is quite limited, so there aren't too many options, but there is English on there.
It is right next to Odori Park, so if there is an event on (Beer Garden, Snow Festival, Yosakoi, Autumn Fest etc) it is very handy. It's quite large, and in the summer there are outdoor tables.

Hours: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Tabelog Rating: A rather handsome 3.47/5
Average Price: Lunch: <¥1000, Dinner ¥1000-¥2000

Ramen no Houryou

I had to enlist my lovely wife to work out the Kanji for this restaurant, but I got there. Ramen no houryuu.
A lovely lady (who you can see in the shot) showed me the English menu, and it was pretty through. A ramen shop obviously, and favoured by the locals when I had a look in, so they must be serving some good ramen. Looking at their Facebook page and website, they have some English staff somewhere too.
Located in Apia (and other places, but today we're talking Apia), so nice and convenient to the station, and the shops, and the subway.
A busy place serving good ramen. Can't do better. It says on Tabelog that they are a smoking restaurant, which surprises me a little, but there you have it.

Opening Hours: 10.30 a.m. - 9.30 p.m. everyday (Last order @ 9)
Average price: < ¥1000

Meat Gang

This is one of the new meat dedicated restaurants that have been springing up recently. I've seen them in shopping malls, Tanuki Koji, Teine, and here in Apia (Sapporo Station.)
When I saw this place at lunchtime, it was super busy. We were going to have our anniversary lunch there, but after we were seated next to a smoking table, and told there was no non-smoking section (after 13:30) we left, but that's the way it is sometimes. It shouldn't be, but it is. Also, be warned, they do charge a ¥400 table charge. They shouldn't, but they do.
They serve meat obviously, and lots of different kinds. I saw the usual steaks, but I also saw quail (うずら) which I thought was nice for a change.
The English menu is a separate menu presented to you upon request, and it looked pretty thorough.

Opening Hours: Lunch - 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Dinner - 4 p.m. - 11 p.m. (Last order 10.30)
Average Price: Lunch - ¥1000 -¥2000, Dinner: ¥3000 - ¥4000

Sukiya

I learnt very quickly that if you want a nice filling feed nice and quick for next to nothing, Sukiya is where you want to go. This particular restaurant is on the main road from Sapporo Station to Odori Park, but they are everywhere.
This is a gyudon (beef bowl) chain, so their main gig is bowls of rice with meat and other toppings. They also do curry now, but I say at a gyudon shop, stick to gyudon.
I checked out the English menu, and it's nice and easy to follow.
Remember, these are everywhere, and they are all pretty much the same I imagine.

Sorpresa Oyster Bar and Grill

Image result for sorpresa oyster bar and grill sapporo
photo from Tabelog

Sorpresa Oyster Bar and Grill is a classy oyster bar with Mexican feel about it in Susukino, the heart of Sapporo's wining and dining scene.
This place came recommended by my friend Miwako (many thanks). Open for dinner only, and only a stone's throw from Susukino Subway Station. It's up on the ninth floor, so maybe some views to be had. There is a 'free-flow',or 飲み放題, or all you can drink option too. Nice. Have you been there? Let me know how it was.

Tony Roma's

Tony Roma's is well-known in many places other than Sapporo I believe so it can be a bit of a shot of home maybe if you miss it.
The main menu is all in English, but the specials aren't which surprised me a little.
Directly opposite the third most disappointing sightseeing spot in Japan (Sapporo Clock Tower) it's a safe bet, with ribs and meat and all sorts of goodness.
Any thoughts anyone? I enjoyed myself when I went there.

Average Price: Lunch ¥1000 - ¥2000, Dinner ¥2000 - ¥3000

Umisakuraezoumi

Umisakura is very close to Odori Park on the left of the main road when walking from Sapporo Station. It is on the second floor, so the entrance is a door only. There is a Sukiya very close to the door.
I went up and it seems nice. Menu is all in English (specials maybe not), and the staff were nice.
Seafood themed izakaya, but with other choices too. Dinner only.

Yebisu Bar

Apia in Sapporo Station again today, this time for the classy looking Yebisu Bar. Yebisu is my favourite brand of beer (alongside Otaru Beer), and this place really looks good. I had a browse through the menu. Nice English, nice food, nice decor. Non-smoking.
Little pricey, but nice and tidy.

Bikkuri Donkey

I have to include Bikori Donkey in these pages. This particular restaurant is on the left of the main road to Odori Park when you walk out of Sapporo Station.
Bikori Donkey serves hamburg, which is not to be mistaken for a hamburger, or a city in Germany. A hamburg is a meat pattie, but a lot more. Big and thick and juicy and yum.
This is a kind of soulfood place for me.
Complete English menu (I would suspect at all restaurants, but I can only speak for this one at this juncture), with information about allergies, gluten intolerance (it's ok to eat here).
Love it. Get there.

Enishi is located on the left of main road coming straight from Sapporo Station toward Odori Park. Look for the Bikkori Donki. It's next to that. It's up an elevator.
The photos over on Tabelog look lovely, with a range of seating options. This is a dinner only place. When I went there at lunch to find out if they had an English menu, they were closed and doing set up.
The menu is on one sheet of paper, with drinks on one side and food on the other. All in English with pictures to boot. They also have a nabe (hotpot) kind of speciality going on.

Umi Hachikyo is a classy sushi restaurant in Susukino, the heart of Sapporo's entertainment district. They actually have three restaurants, as you can see over on their beautiful website, which is completely in English and nice and easy to see what you are going to get.
It isn't the cheapest place in all of Sapporo, but you know how you get what you pay for.

Toriyosakanayo

Toriyosakanayo pretty much translates to chicken and fish. The ~よ, or -yo is kind of added for effect and as a linker. It kind of means Yeah!
A large izakaya that is open for dinner, no lunch here.
A particular thing I like about this izakaya is the horigotatsu seats.  This consists of a low table, but the floor is sunken, so you don't have to sit with your legs folded, but it is traditional style. And if it all gets too much you can climb under and have a nap while everyone carries on.
English menu, comfortable seats, fried chicken, seafood. What are you waiting for? Enjoy.
